Questions and answers on the world of digital archives.
- What is the best file type for my digital images?
The currently recommended format is the TIFF, for two reasons: it guarantees lossless file compression/decompression;
a format that is open and not proprietary lasts better in time, thus preventing obsolescence.
- What do I need to do to ensure data usability in time?
Make sure that the data is in an open format and that the platform on which it runs is also open source.
An open format – despite the possible inconvenience of not being up to date with technical innovations – guarantees not finding oneself obstructed by private service provider decisions.
- I am afraid of losing my data. What are the best practices that I can implement to reduce this risk?
To make sure you don’t lose your data, you need to make sure you create a backup on at least three servers in three different geographic areas
to reduce the damage deriving from issues with one of the servers.
- What does it mean to guarantee interoperability?
Interoperability is a software’s ability to interact with other IT systems. The aim is to make the interaction, exchange, and reuse of information possible, even between two different IT systems.
As for the digital archive sector, interoperability means the possibility to migrate content through either the export or import of data.
